A Professional Wedding MC… Why Your Wedding Needs More Than a Mate With a Mic & Jokes
You've spent thousands on your dream wedding reception.
But who's actually making sure it all comes together?
RIGHTO. This one might ruffle a few feathers…. You've spent months, maybe YEARS, planning your wedding. You've booked the beautiful venue, the incredible photographer, the DJ, the flowers, the styling, the food and the drinks. You've spent a small fortune creating this amazing celebration for all your favourite humans. You've agonised over seating charts, finalised your run sheet and probably had at least one minor breakdown about something as ridiculous as napkin colours…. Then someone asks... "Who's going to MC your reception?"
"Oh, we'll just get a mate Dave to do it. He's pretty funny!"
Now don't get me wrong. I LOVE Dave. Dave's a cracking bloke. He's confident, he's got some great stories, and after a couple of beers he's practically convinced himself he's the next . But here's my question... You've just spent $40,000 on your wedding. Are you really leaving the responsibility of running your reception to a mate who is meant to be enjoying the night? OOOOFT….. I said it.
And before all the Daves out there come for me, hear me out. Because a great wedding MC does a WHOLE lot more than hold a microphone and chat to your guests! And as someone who has spent YEARS professionally MCing weddings across Newcastle, the Hunter Valley and beyond, I can tell you that the biggest part of my job is often the stuff nobody even notices.
Being Funny Doesn't Mean You Can Run a Wedding
Now, let's be clear. A good MC SHOULD be entertaining. They should be confident, personable, engaging and know how to work a room.
They should know when to get everyone laughing, when to build excitement and when to shut up and let a beautiful moment happen.
But here's the thing... That's the bit everyone SEES…. The introductions. The announcements. The banter. The microphone. And yes, I bloody LOVE that part of my job.
But being a great MC isn't just about what happens in front of your guests. It's about what's happening BEHIND them.
The coordination. The communication. The timing. The preparation. It's knowing what needs to happen next, who needs to be ready and what needs to be organised BEFORE you ever make the announcement. And THAT'S where experience makes a massive difference.
The Stuff You DON'T See a Great MC Doing
Let me paint you a picture… It's ten minutes before the speeches… Dad's about to get up and deliver what will probably be one of the most emotional moments of the entire reception…. Now, Dave might look at the run sheet, see that speeches start at 6:15 pm and announce... "Alright everyone, let's welcome the father of the bride!"
But here's what I'VE been doing for the last 15 minutes… I've found Dad… I've let him know he's up shortly… I've made sure he's got his speech…. I've checked that his speech isn't still in his jacket pocket... which is currently in the car…. I've made sure he's got his reading glasses, because the last thing Dad needs is to realise he can't actually READ his speech when 120 people are staring at him…. I've checked that the photographer and videographer are ready and where they would like him positioned…. I've made sure they have plugged into my microphone to ensure Dad’s moment is captured….. And I've touched base with the venue to make sure everyone is on the same page.
THEN I announce Dad.
And what happens? He gets up, delivers a beautiful speech, probably makes everyone cry, and sits back down to a massive round of applause…. Nobody notices all the little things that happened beforehand.
And that's EXACTLY the point…. A great MC isn't just announcing moments. They're making sure those moments happen beautifully.
And it's not just the speeches.
The Cake Cutting
Has someone checked that the cake knife is actually beside the cake? Does the photographer know it's happening? Is the DJ ready with the music? Are the couple standing in the right spot so their photographer can capture the moment? Because nothing kills a lovely cake-cutting moment quite like everyone standing around wondering where the bloody knife has gone.
The Wedding Party Entrance
Is everyone actually there? Do they know who they're walking in with? Has the DJ got the right song ready? Does everyone know when to enter? And most importantly, is the room PUMPED and ready to welcome the newlyweds? Because there's a big difference between awkwardly announcing six people walking into a room and creating an entrance that has everyone on their feet, cheering and ready for one hell of a night.
The Sunset Photos
Your photographer has just spotted the most incredible golden light. They want another fifteen minutes with you. And honestly? GO FOR IT!
Those photos are going to be bloody beautiful. But who's letting the kitchen know you'll be a little late? Who's touching base with the venue coordinator? Who's keeping the DJ informed? Who's making sure your guests are still entertained and that the rest of the evening can be adjusted where possible?
ME…. Well... when you book me as your MC, anyway! 😉
These are all little things.. Until they aren't… Because when nobody is looking after them, those little things become awkward pauses, delayed meals, missed moments and unnecessary stress. And that's NOT what you want to remember about your wedding reception.
A Run Sheet Doesn't Run Itself!
Ahhhh, the run sheet. The beautifully colour-coded document you've spent weeks putting together.
6:00 pm — Wedding Party Entrance.
6:30 pm — Speeches
7:15 pm — Mains
8:00 pm — Cake Cutting.
8:15 pm — First Dance.
PERFECT! Except... Your photographer needs fifteen extra minutes…. The best man has disappeared to the bar… The kitchen is running slightly behind… Dad's speech is three pages longer than anyone anticipated…. And someone has just informed you that the cake knife is missing and best man’s pants are ripped…..
Welcome to weddings!
Here's the thing…. A run sheet is a PLAN. It is NOT a person.
It doesn't communicate with the kitchen. It doesn't cue the DJ. It doesn't prepare your speakers. It doesn't recognise when the room needs a little more energy. And it certainly doesn't solve a problem when something changes.
That's what an experienced MC helps do. I work with your venue, DJ, photographer, videographer and other vendors to make sure everyone is working together. And when things need to change? We adjust. We communicate. We keep things moving. Without you needing to be involved in every little decision. Because you've spent MONTHS planning this day. You shouldn't have to spend the actual wedding RUNNING it.
"But Ben, Our Venue Has a Coordinator!"
BRILLIANT! I LOVE working with good venue coordinators and wedding planners. They're absolute weapons at what they do.
But their job and my job aren't necessarily the same thing. Your venue coordinator might be looking after the kitchen, service, staff and venue logistics. Your wedding planner might be overseeing the bigger picture and coordinating suppliers. Your DJ is handling the soundtrack. Your photographer is capturing all those incredible moments.
And me? I'm helping connect what's happening behind the scenes with what's happening in front of your guests. We're all part of the same team.
And when everyone is communicating and working together, the result is something pretty special. The kitchen is ready. The DJ is ready. Your speakers are ready. Your guests are engaged. And the reception just FLOWS. No awkward waiting. No unnecessary confusion. No couple being asked twenty questions when they're supposed to be enjoying their night. Just a bloody great celebration.
And What About Poor Old Dave?
Now, here's another part of this conversation that I reckon gets overlooked. Dave is your MATE. You've invited him to your wedding because he's someone important in your life. Someone you want standing beside you, raising a glass, sharing a laugh and celebrating one of the biggest days you'll ever have. But now you've handed him a microphone, a run sheet and a whole heap of responsibility.
While everyone else is enjoying canapés, Dave's checking the timeline. While his mates are having a beer, Dave's trying to find the best man. While everyone else is listening to the speeches, Dave's worrying about what happens next. And when something changes? Guess who the venue, DJ and other vendors might come looking for? DAVE!
Now, some mates genuinely LOVE being an MC. And some are bloody brilliant at it, that’s how i found myself in the wedding industry! But others agree because they're honoured to be asked, without really understanding the responsibility that comes with the job. And let's be honest- Being the funniest bloke in your friendship group doesn't automatically make you the best person to manage your wedding reception.
Sometimes, the best thing you can do for your mate is let him enjoy your wedding. Let him have a beer. Let him have a laugh. Let him get amongst the dance floor. Let him be part of the memories rather than worrying about managing them. Because Dave deserves a cracking night too.
A Great MC Knows When to Bring the Energy... And When to Get Out of the Way!
Now before you think hiring a professional MC means turning your reception into a four-hour stand-up comedy special... PLEASE NO.
There's nothing worse than an MC who thinks the entire wedding is about them. Every announcement becomes a performance. Every speech needs a follow-up joke. Every moment somehow needs to involve the bloke holding the microphone.
Mate. It's a wedding. Not your Netflix comedy special. For me, a great MC knows how to read the room. When to pump everyone up. When to get the laughs flowing. When to throw in some cheeky banter. And when to step back and let those beautiful moments happen. Because sometimes the best thing you can do with a microphone... Is put the bloody thing down.
Your reception should feel relaxed, natural and full of those incredible moments that make weddings so special. Not like everyone is sitting through an overly enthusiastic awards ceremony.
You've Spent Thousands. Make the Most of It!
Here's what I really want couples to think about.
You've invested SO much into your wedding. The venue. The food. The drinks. The styling. The photography. The entertainment. And all those little details that have taken months to organise.
A professional MC isn't there to replace any of those things. They're there to help you get the most out of ALL of them. To help make sure those beautiful moments happen smoothly. That your guests are engaged. That your vendors are communicating. That the timeline is managed without feeling rushed. That the energy in the room is exactly where it needs to be.
And most importantly... That YOU get to enjoy the celebration you've spent so long planning.
Because the best wedding receptions aren't necessarily the ones where everything happens exactly on time. They're the ones where everything just FEELS right. The laughs are genuine. The emotional moments are beautiful. The room is buzzing. And the couple are having the absolute time of their lives. That's what we're aiming for.
So, Why Book ME as Your Wedding MC?
Well, I'm glad you asked!
I'm Ben Jones, a professional Wedding MC and Marriage Celebrant based in Newcastle, working across the Hunter Valley, Lake Macquarie, Port Stephens, the Central Coast and beyond. And I LOVE what I do.
I love bringing the energy. I love having a laugh with your guests. I love the cheeky introductions, the big moments and watching a room full of people come together to celebrate two incredible humans.
But equally? I love the stuff nobody sees. The preparation. The organisation. The conversations with vendors. The little prompts before important moments. The adjustments that keep an evening running smoothly. Because that combination is what I believe makes a great MC.
Someone who can command a room with a microphone in their hand, and coordinate the important details when it's not.
When you book me as your MC, I'll work with you before the wedding to understand the feel you're after, your reception plans and those special moments you want included.
I'll help develop and refine the reception run sheet, communicate with your vendors, coordinate formalities and keep your guests engaged throughout the evening.
Whether you're planning a relaxed, intimate reception or a massive celebration with all the bells and whistles, my goal is the same.
You enjoy your wedding. I'll help take care of the rest.
And if you're looking for a celebrant too? EVEN BETTER! I offer a combined Celebrant + MC package, meaning I can help bring that same relaxed, heartfelt, fun energy from your ceremony right through to the reception. One familiar face. One consistent vibe. One bloke who already knows your story, your people and probably far too many embarrassing details about how you met.
Let's Give Your Wedding the MC It Deserves! 🎤
At the end of the day, your mate Dave might be an absolute legend. He might be hilarious. He might even be bloody good with a microphone. But there's a difference between someone who can announce what's happening and someone who can help make it all happen. And when you've spent thousands of dollars and months of planning creating the wedding of your dreams, that difference matters.
Don't leave the success of your reception hanging on whether Dave remembers what's next on the run sheet.
Let Dave enjoy his beer. Let your family enjoy the speeches. Let your guests enjoy the celebration. And let ME take care of the microphone, the timings, the vendor communication and all those little behind-the-scenes details that make a BIG difference.
